\nEasily one of my favorite films of last year (it even made my top ten list), Ti West’s take on the haunted house is equal parts well-played comedy and atmospheric horror, and both parts work perfectly. I loved every second of this film, and I’m looking forward to revisiting the Yankee Pedlar soon.

\"\"Pearls of the Czech New Wave<\/b> Eclipse Set
\nI’ve seen just enough Czech New Wave films to whet my interest for more, and this is the first Eclipse set I’ve really though seriously about buying. Of these, I’ve only seen Daisies<\/em> before, and it is whacked out anarchist fun. For more info on the films included in this set, I’d recommend checking out the blog Bonjour Tristesse<\/a>, which has been doing a very comprehensive Czech New Wave series that has hit most if not all of these films.

Other Catalog Releases<\/h3>\n

The 1980s British miniseries version of Tinker Tailor Solider Spy<\/em> and the 1967 version of Camelot<\/em> hit Blu-ray, plus Warner Archive has a bunch of Lon Chaney-Tod Browning silents and a collection of swashbucklers. I’ve also added a section for the Sony Pictures Choice Collection, largely because the Warner Archive tumblr was kind enough to highlight them this week. I’ll continue to mention them if they do. \ud83d\ude42 But basically, this is the same general idea as the Warner Archive – catalog titles released on-demand on DVD-R, they don’t make them until you order them.<\/p>\n

\nI caught this tiny indie film at the LA Film Fest a couple of years ago, and have taken the opportunity to champion it whenever relevant. Looks like it’s relevant again. With shades of Cassavettes and the Nouvelle Vague, the film follows a jazz musician (played by real musician Palmer) and his burgeoning relationship with a waitress. It’s basically a musical, and a very charming one – unassuming yet quite endearing.
